Aquarium Surface Protein

protein skimmers and fresh water aquariums?
It sounds like a good idea; skim the surface of the water to remove any films, oils, etc. Would this work for a freshwater aquarium also? Or do you need sea water to make it work?
Protein skimmers do not (just) skim the surface of the water.(mine doesn't touch surface water)
the micro airbubbles within the skimmer extract (skim) protein from the water before they impact the biological filter . this does not work as well in freshwater aquariums due to the lack of high salinity to produce a good skim(bubbles)
when you walk on the beach and see the foam on the shoreline, that is the oceans natural protein skimmer. you don't see that so much in freshwater.
what you are talking about is a surface skimmer and YES, it is a great idea for any tank to have as much surface tension and cleanest surface water as possible.
